What is Networking?
Connecting with those who you admire, know, and trust can open your eyes to trends, perspectives, and opportunities in your desired career field. Networking is a planned process. In formal and informal settings, you will interact with and get to know people who can provide information about the world of work, job openings, personal contacts, and employers who are hiring.
Key Networking Rules
- Think long term. Networking relationships should not be one-time interactions but should be established and maintained throughout your college years and career. Start early.
- The more you give, the more you’ll get. Networking is most effective when it has mutual benefits. For example, you may benefit from networking by gaining a better understanding about a particular field of work or learning about a job or internship lead. An alum might benefit from gaining an update about what is happening at UVA or getting a chance to share their opinions about their work or field. Remember, do not ask for a job, build a relationship.
- Quality over quantity. We have numerous opportunities to meet new people every day in person and online. These people don’t really become a part of our network unless we maintain and expand those relationships.
Networking Steps to Success
Create a list of 10-20 people you know. You might be surprised at how many useful contacts you already
have! Be sure to list their professions as well. Start with your UVA network of professors, classmates, and alumni.
Using resources found on the Career Center’s website and Handshake you can learn more about your network. Some examples include CareerShift, LinkedIn, and Virginia Alumni Mentoring, which are free to UVA students.
According to LinkedIn, 70% of companies use social media screening when hiring, and 57% don’t hire candidates because of what they find on profiles. Do not post anything online that you would not want a potential employer to see.
When interacting with your network, remember to be conversational. Share with your network your career goals and let them know more about yourself. Be present in the moment and prepared with questions. Actively listen when talking with professionals in your network and remember to ask open-ended questions.
Make sure to continue communicating so the experience is not limited to a one-time conversation, but instead grows into an established relationship. Focus on building the relationship.
