Why Work On Grounds?
Student employment offers you exposure to different organizations, work cultures, and functional roles. Students who work summer jobs or part-time jobs during the academic year develop strong transferable skills to internships and professional positions. These employment opportunities can also help you establish a network of referrals and key contacts in your intended industries of interest. Student employment provides many students with the ability to support their financial needs while attending UVA.
How to Find On-Grounds Jobs
First, update your resume & cover letter. This is an important step before applying and interviewing. Check out our resumes & cover letters page for tips and examples.
Federal Work-Study is one type of financial aid students may be eligible for. Find your eligibility and accept it in your SIS Student Center online. Work-study funds can be applied to any on-Grounds job and even some community positions. Some jobs require Federal Work-Study and will include “(Federal Work-Study)” or “(FWS)” in their job title on Handshake.

Regardless of if you are work-study eligible or not, you can search & apply for on-Grounds jobs in Handshake. Use the filter “On-Campus Student Employment” in the Handshake job board to find jobs on Grounds. You can also reach out directly to a specific office you want to work in to find the job opportunities they have.

Employment I-9 Requirement
When you are offered an on-Grounds job, you will be required to complete your federal I-9 verification within 3 days of starting work. This includes meeting a Human Resources representative in person to show identity and employment authorization documentation. Having the necessary documentation on hand will help make this process smooth, leaving you ready to start your new job. Be sure to bring these documents with you to Grounds if you plan to get a job.
International Students with an F-1 or J-1 visa can work a job on Grounds and may need approval from the International Studies Office. For questions about work eligibility and visas for international students, visit the International Students and Scholars website or email issp@virginia.edu.
