The UVA Internship Placement Program (IPP) is a year-round experiential learning program supported by the UVA Career Center and the UVA Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. IPP gives undergraduate students the opportunity to apply their academic coursework to work-based learning experiences through a supervised internship and a corresponding reflection course.
Internships are completed at 10 hours per week during the semester sessions (fall and spring) and 20 hours per week during the summer session. The 1-credit internship reflection course is offered in the fall and spring semesters concurrently with the internship; summer interns complete their reflection course in the following fall. Paired together, the internship and reflection course create a tailored experiential learning opportunity for students as they explore their career goals, interests, and skills.
Eligibility
- Full-time UVA undergraduate student
- Good academic standing; overall GPA > 3.0
- Clear student disciplinary record
- Meet the health, age, academic, security, and/or related internship criteria of the sponsoring organization
Commitment
In accepting an IPP internship, students agree to complete the following:
- Intern Orientation
- Internship Hours
- Semester Session = 10 hours/week
- Summer Session = 20 hours/week
- Internship Reflection Course
- 1 credit course for each IPP session
- Intern Performance Evaluation
- Note: Students are not permitted to pursue IPP internships outside of the program; doing so is a violation of program policies and requirements that ensure quality internship experiences.
Application Process
The IPP team uses information provided in the application and interview process to match students with a customized internship placement based on the best fit for their interests, skills, and goals. IPP is a great option for students who are exploring career paths and functional roles and are open to gaining experience across a wide range of industries and with professionals who are dedicated mentors and supervisors.
As a placement program, while every consideration will be given to your internship site preferences, specific placements cannot be guaranteed due to student demand, site selectivity, and/or the specific requirements of some internship sites.
IPP applications are considered incomplete until both the Handshake submission (resume and transcript) and the Qualtrics submission (application questions) have been completed.

When the application closes, you will be unable to re-review the descriptions in Handshake.

Schedule a follow-up virtual interview with an IPP team member via Handshake. Plan accordingly, interview slots fill quickly. Interview slots are not guaranteed which is why it’s important to apply early.
