Networking in a virtual environment has many benefits, including the opportunity to connect with professionals and alumni in a variety of locations. Some virtual platforms that you might be expected to use include Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, and  Adobe Connect.

1. Attend a Virtual UVA Career Event

You can register for any upcoming event on Handshake
Each Handshake event will include a Zoom link to participate

2. Connect with UVA Alumni on the Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM) Platform 

Think of this platform as a LinkedIn for UVA students and UVA alumni
You can use this platform to ask about career advice (or talk about your favorite Charlottesville restaurants!!)

3. Create & Update Your Handshake Profile

Employers are searching for students on Handshake based on the information in their profiles.
Employers use Handshake to message candidates about new job opportunities.

4. Emails are Typically the First Point of Contact with Employers

Emails are the most common way to communicate with employers, so crafting the perfect email is a great way to make a strong first impression

How to Prepare for Virtual Events:

In addition to research that you would typically do to prepare for a career fair, like investigating company websites or preparing your elevator pitch, you will want to allocate time to researching the structure of the event.

These events will incorporate a combination of group meetings (professional speaking to 10+ students) and one-on-one sessions (professional with one student for 10 minutes). Some events may be “Conference Style” where the programming will be held over several days and some events will require advance sign-up.

In order to minimize confusion, please refer to the “Events” and “Fairs” Section on Handshake as we plan to add very detailed instructions to each event and/or fair.
