Pre-Health

As a pre-health student, we know how important it is to take the required prerequisites before applying to your health professions school of choice. It is important that you take time to get settled into college and enjoy your time at UVA. The below plan is specific to those on a pre-med path, but many of the required prerequisite courses are the same for other health professions. This sample plan and timeline is what a majority of successful UVA applicants follow.

For those not planning to take a bridge year, the below plan illustrates how that would look:

This plan requires you to complete the necessary prerequisites in three years and significantly shortens the amount of time that you can build up clinical experience before submitting your application, which is a very important factor in having a competitive application.

Choosing when you apply to medical school is strategic and we are here to support you with whatever timeline you feel is right for you. Our most successful applicants take at least one bridge year, highlighted in the first sample plan. 81% of our accepted applicants take at least one, if not multiple bridge years. As you progress throughout your time at UVA, make sure that you meet with our pre-health advisors to discuss what timeline will be best for you.
