What is the DAT?

The Dental Admissions Test (DAT) is a multiple-choice assessment designed to evaluate an individual's knowledge across four distinct areas. It is a comprehensive examination of the natural sciences, perceptual ability, reading comprehension and quantitative reasoning. In order to participate in the admissions process at dental schools, it is mandatory for each student applying in the United States or Canada to complete the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). The Digital Assessment Test (DAT) is a computer-based examination that requires around 4.5 hours to finish.

How do I Prepare for the DAT?

A comprehensive self-study resource, DAT Booster comes highly recommended. There are many other study options available, including DAT Destroyer, DAT Cracker, and the Princeton Review. It's important to choose the program that best suits your needs, as all these options will adequately prepare you!

To effectively prepare for the DAT, it is advisable for students to utilize comprehensive self-study courses that offer high-quality videos. It is also important to allocate ample time for studying, making sure to engage with detailed lessons. Typically, it is advised to dedicate around three to four months for studying for the DAT. If you're just starting to study for the DAT, it's highly recommended to take the real-time practicum test offered by your chosen study resource. This approach allows for a more precise evaluation of the areas that require additional attention, while also providing a realistic simulation of the test conditions you will encounter.

It is strongly advised that you refrain from devoting your studying time to the memorization of excessively minute details. The DAT demands a higher level of critical thinking and practical application rather than regurgitating information. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize the understanding of fundamental concepts. Given that the Natural Sciences Section is the largest on the DAT, more time should be allotted to ensure  that you comprehend the subjects thoroughly.

Helpful pointers and recommendation for the DAT:

  1. Practice, practice, and watch the videos that your chosen study materials have to offer for the PAT portion of the DAT.

  2. It's important to grasp the basic principles of natural science in order to make the most of your time.

  3. Don't panic, and if one question stumps you, move on to the next!

  4. Your score does not define you, trust your intuition on questions and do your best!
