Internship Placement Program FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I see what internships are available?

Search and apply for Internship Placement Program opportunities in Handshake in the “Jobs” section using the search text “IPP.”

When is the best time to submit my application?

The Internship Placement Program recruitment is rolling.  Subsequent deadlines will be posted.  Due to the required interview, we suggest applying as soon as possible.

I am not sure what type of internship will be of interest to me. How do I rank my top 5?

It is not uncommon to be unsure about your career interests. Exploration is what internships are all about. Seek a career counselor at the UVA Career Center to help you develop your focus and assist you in your search. General drop-in hours are scheduled daily as well as specific industry focused advising times.

Will my GPA be considered?

The Internship Placement Program seeks students who are in good academic standing, but will not select on the basis of GPA unless an academic profile is requested by the internship site.

I am very focused with my career goals and interests. What if I don’t see any internships that are a fit?

This is a great reason to connect with the Internship Placement Program team to discuss the potential of cultivating a new internship placement partnership to meet your needs.

How and when will I be informed about my internship placement?

You will be emailed by the notification date on the timeline which will inlcude a preliminary placement for a final interview with an internship site or pending status.  As IPP cannot guarantee an internship placement due to variables such as the quantity and quality of applications, the IPP team continues to source internships for pending candidates up until the start of the session.  If you are a pending candidate, you will have the choice to stay on an active list for later placements that become available for your intended session or defer to another session.

Is an internship guaranteed?

While every effort will be made to match you with available opportunities, an internship cannot be guaranteed for a variety of factors such as timing of your application, strength of applicant pool, popularity of certain internship sites, and on rare occasions, final decision of the internship site.  For students not matched in the Internship Placement Program, the UVA Career Center will provide advising and resources to assist students in sourcing internships through Handshake and other secondary resources.

If I don’t get my top internship site should I just withdraw and reapply next year?

Explore your placement options fully with the IPP team. Many past interns have gained tremendous experience and value from a placement that was not their top choice.

Are internships paid or unpaid?

Most IPP internships are unpaid. Each internship description in Handshake will note if the position is paid or unpaid.
