The UVA Internship Placement Program provides students with an invaluable experiential learning opportunity to advance their career development through professional internships. 

To confirm an internship placement, supervisors and interns must complete the Internship Placement Program Commitment Form. Please review the participation guidelines and submit this form to confirm the placement. Participation Guidelines

The UVA Internship Placement Program supports interns and internship sites by providing the following:

• A mandatory Intern Orientation & Professional Skills Workshop emphasizing professionalism, business etiquette, communication skills, and goal setting. 
• Certification of intern eligibility (academic good standing).  
• Guidelines, policies, and standards of conduct for participation.
• Designated Career Center staff to manage program operations and monitor intern progress, intern evaluation, and any issues or questions that arise during the internship session.
• Communication and programming with internship partners to clarify program policies and procedures, share internship best practices, and resources.
• 1 credit academic course, UNST 3510: Internship Reflection, taken by all interns. 

Internship sites offer quality internship experiences by providing the following:

• A designated supervisor to orient the intern(s) to the organization and its culture, assist in the development of learning objectives, and meet regularly with the intern(s) to monitor internship progress.
• Assignment of duties to the intern(s) that are career related, progressive, and challenging.
• Availability of equipment, supplies, and space necessary for the intern(s) to perform his/her duties. 
• Encouragement and support to intern(s) throughout the duration of the internship.  
• A safe working environment. 
• Notification to the UVA Internship Placement Program of any changes in the intern's work status, schedule, or performance.
• Communication of your organization’s intern policies and standards to the student and UVA Internship Placement Program team.
• Maintaining general liability, professional liability and worker’s compensation insurance as required by law.
• Adherence to the Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act. 
• Completion of intern performance evaluation.
• Complete the Internship Placement Commitment Form.

Interns are expected to:

• Complete the mandatory Intern Orientation & Professional Skills Workshop prior to the start of their internship.
• Uphold professional conduct, policies, and procedures established by the UVA Internship Placement Program.
• Adhere to HR policies set forth by their internship site. 
• Exhibit professionalism, approach the internship as a learning opportunity, and honor their commitment to their internship placement.
• Connect regularly with supervisor and mutually create internship goals connected to the intern's goals and career interests. 
• Communicate in a timely fashion any internship issues or changes to the UVA Internship Placement Program team.
• Maintain and complete 20 hours/week (Summer Session) and 10 hours/week (Academic Year, Fall Only, Spring Only Sessions) 
• Register and complete UNST 3510: Internship Reflection for each semester of their internship. 
• Complete the Internship Placement Commitment Form. 

Termination Policy

The UVA Internship Placement Program requires students to commit to 20 hours/week (Summer Session) and 10 hours/week (Academic Year, Fall Only, Spring Only Sessions). Students must complete their internship commitment to remain in good standing with the program and to receive academic credit.

If a supervisor or an intern wishes to terminate the internship arrangement, please notify the UVA Internship Placement Program. The UVA Internship Placement Program may remove any organization or intern for not complying with program guidelines and procedures. 

PLACEMENT CONFIRMATION

On my Honor, I elect to voluntarily accept this internship placement and understand my commitment to the UVA Internship Placement Program (IPP). I pledge to uphold the program guidelines and satisfy my commitment. I fully recognize that any failure to meet program expectations will compromise my agreement and can result in immediate removal from the program.
