UVA recognizes the importance of engaging all students, especially those from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented populations that might not have access to professional networks, or the time and space to assess their strengths.
To support this mission, the UVA Career Center, in partnership with the UVA IDEA Fund, an alumni group that funds innovative initiatives around Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access, created the IDEA Fund Fellowship Program.
This 9-month program aims to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to have a meaningful developmental journey outside of classroom.
After four months of intensive career development workshops focusing on professionalism, networking, industry basics and more, students will embark on a real-world professional job shadowing experience, or externship, for up to one week.
Upon returning from their experiences, students will continue to attend workshops and meetups to increase their skills and knowledge around careers and to foster a diverse and competitive crop of young professionals.
- Frequent one-on-one career counseling
- Invitation to group meet-ups once a month around various professional development topics
- Unique networking opportunities with IDEA Fund Board members, UVA alums, and employers
- Currently enrolled as 2nd or 3rd year student, in good academic standing
- Identify with/be a member of an under-represented group as it relates to race/ethnicity, gender identity, ability status, socioeconomic class, first generation college student, and/or veteran status
Nomination Process & Deadline
The 2018 nomination deadline is Fri. Oct. 26th. Please use the Student Nomination Form to nominate one, or multiple students.
Please Note: Students are also able to self-nominate. If you are a student who is interested in the program, please select the option within the nomination form that states: “I wish to self-nominate.”
Students who are nominated, will be requested to fill out an application. Selection is based on application materials. GPA is not considered, but students must be in good academic standing. Selection committee will consist of UVA staff, faculty, and IDEA Fund Board members. Students will be informed selections by early December.
Formal Fellowship Agreement
Once students accept an offer via email, the student is required to complete and sign the Fellowship Agreement, which will be given to students during the required orientation session. The agreement will ensure that you are fully aware of the Fellowship program components, policies, and we will require an emergency contact.
