For over 40 years, the University of Virginia has connected students to quality internships with public service and private industry organizations within the Charlottesville community as part of its public service mission.  The UVA Internship Placement Program continues this tradition offering students customized placement with a qualified internship site matched to their career field of interest for the summer, semester, or academic year.  

The UVA Internship Placement Program implements a quality internship program that begins with intern recruitment, selection, and preliminary matching to ensure partners receive the best possible intern placements for consideration. The program provides professional development, such as Intern Orientation and Professional Skills Workshop, and ongoing resources and support to ensure interns are prepared and successful contributors and learners in your organization.  Program supervisors collaborate in this learning process by completing mid and final performance intern evaluations to assess intern professional development, learning outcomes, and quality of experience. Internship sites are pre-qualified to meet UVA standards and guidelines established for internships by the Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act.

Organization Eligibility

Private industry, public sector, non-profit, start-up, and community organizations across a diverse range of industries are represented in the Internship Placement Program.  Participating organizations must meet the following criteria to participate:

  • Offer interns a professional workspace that is not a home business location (or virtual)
  • Consist of a staff of at least three members (start-up founders are encouraged to apply if all other criteria can be met)
  • Appoint a supervisor and a mentor to support the internship experience and fulfull program requirements
  • Develop an internship learning plan
  • Complete mid-term and final semester professional internship reviews (evaluations)
  • Adhere to intership guidelines and requirements as dictated by the Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Participate in Supervisor Orientation

Partner Registration

An administrative fee invoice of $100 will be emailed after your completed registration (*renewing UIP partner fees are waived for 2018-19). Registration waivers are available for non-profit and start-up organizations by request to InternshipCenter@virginia.edu.

  2. Post Your Internship with the title: "IPP: Organization Name/Internship Title"
  3. Register for the Internship Placement Program
