UVA Career IDEAs Externship Program: George Washington University Miliken Institute School of Public Health

Career Administrator

Overall, I had an enriching experience with Ms. Morgan Ganoe and her team at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH).  As Assistant Director of Admissions at GWSPH, Ms. Ganoe allowed me to shadow her as she attended the weekly admissions team meeting and fulfilled her daily tasks such as addressing faculty and student concerns over concentration changes, coding in Banner (the student information system for higher education used by GWSPH), and processing student applications through SOPHAS (the centralized application service for schools of public health).  I also had the opportunity to shadow other members of the admissions team such as the Director of Admissions, Admissions Coordinator, and Recruitment Chair as they extended decisions, reviewed denied student applications, met with prospective and admitted students, and met with the communications team to discuss outreach opportunities.  Due to my academic and career interests in global public health, I was able to meet with the Academic Program Manager of the Global Health Department.  During this one-on-one meeting, I learned about the various academic tracks within the Global Health Department, current research projects of students and faculty, research and job prospects for graduates, and more!  On my last day, I was able to sit through the Spring Orientation for incoming students and learn more about the school and academic programs as if I too were an incoming student.  Though the duration of my externship was only three days, I learned a lot, not only about the roles of admissions team, but also about all that GWSPH has to offer students seeking a graduate degree in one of the 30+ programs offered.  After obtaining unique insight into a school of public health, I am now more confident in my pursuit of a Masters in Public Health and a future career in the field.

The Career IDEAs Externship Program aims to connect students with meaningful externship opportunities in J-Term and during the Summer months. Students apply to the program via Handshake and get selected by an externship site that will help them explore the industry of their choice. The program is open to all students, but priority will be given to those who have not had an externship or internship experience. The following groups are especially encouraged to apply: 2nd and 3rd years who are first-generation college students and part of under-represented populations.  Learn more about the program.  Applications Open In March for Summer 2018! This program is made possible due to partnership with the UVA IDEA Fund.  Learn more about the IDEA Fund here.
