It's time to graduate!
It has been a pleasure being the Sustainability Career Peer Educator (CPE) at the Career Center this past year and putting together the monthly Sustainability newsletter for you all.
I came to UVA as a transfer student in Spring 2017, and declared a double major in Environmental Sciences, and Environmental Thought & Practice. In Fall 2017, I started working at the Career Center as a CPE for Sustainability Careers, which was a new initiative starting that semester. I was the very first Sustainability CPE to be hired and one of my proudest accomplishments at UVA has been the chance to develop this vector further over the last year.
I always thought my UVA job was really cool because I got to work in the same field that I’m majoring in, and this allowed me to get to know my area of study better. Since last year I have had the pleasure of meeting with many of you regarding resume reviews, job applications, and declaring majors. Getting to know my peers and what motivates them has been one of the most exciting parts of this job.
After three semesters at UVA, it’s now time for me to graduate and pass on the Sustainability CPE work to another student. This summer I will be working at UVA, and with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation as a Conservation Scholar. This isn’t the end of school for me, as next year I will be going to graduate school, hoping to learn more about environmental policymaking.
A huge shout out to Christie Julien for being such an amazing supervisor, and for the CPE program for being a constant source of support throughout my short time at UVA. Another shout out to the UVA Department of Environmental Sciences, because it’s made up of simply the best people!
If you’re a fourth year, I wish you all the best as you figure out the next steps of your career. If you’re a first, second, or third year, just remember that there is a lot you can do to make a positive impact on the planet. I have always been a believer of “all roads can lead to sustainability” and you don’t need to have a specific major in order to care for the earth. So, go out and do great things UVA!
