Connecting your CIO to your Future: DREAMers On Grounds
Check out this week’s spotlight on DREAMers On Grounds featuring Kirandeep Gill, who is majoring in Foreign Affairs. Read on to learn Kirandeep’s journey with DREAMers On Grounds.
What is the benefit of joining DREAMers On Grounds?
By joining DREAMers on Grounds, you are helping us achieve our goal of making UVa a more inclusive environment for undocumented students through education, advocacy, and allyship. Joining DREAMers on Grounds gives you an opportunity to help your peers and make change at UVA. The people who help with our events and show up to UndocuAlly trainings are showing their undocumented friends they have a place at UVA and they will be protected.
What is your current role and overall experience of being involved in DREAMers On Grounds? How have you achieved, or hope to attain personal development?
I currently serve as the Public Relations Chair for DREAMers on Grounds. Serving in this capacity has given me a pathway to get involved in advocating for a cause I truly care about. Through this organization, I have been able to grow in many capacities. Being a part of DREAMers on Grounds has allowed me to become more aware of the struggles my peers face every day and find ways to help them. It has taught me to be patient and resilient. Through this organization I have been awarded with the opportunity to meet amazing, strong people who are changing the world.
How does DREAMers On Grounds help undergraduate students explore their options, in terms of career track, or explore something about themselves (i.e. strengths, weaknesses, limitations)?
DREAMers on Grounds can help you figure out what you’re passionate about. Some of our members are looking towards immigration or human rights law or advocacy jobs and these interests have been further developed by active membership in this organization. It also calls on your creativity. We are always looking for creative ways to get the community’s attention and get them interested in immigrants’ rights. This organization helps you connect with your community and figure out the best ways to implement change and fight for a cause you’re truly passionate about.
What advice/information would you give to UVA students interested in exploring DREAMers On Grounds? What is the time commitment?
A good way to find out more about DREAMers on Grounds and our mission is by attending an UndocuAlly training. These trainings are held throughout the semester, and we post on our Facebook page well in advance of a scheduled training. Also, feel free to reach out to us! We have options that fit every schedule. If you’re not sure about how much time you can commit, you can simply be added to our listserv and like the DREAMers on Grounds Facebook page to stay up-to-date with what’s going on with policy changes and how the undocumented community is being affected. This will also give you an opportunity to see what events we are having and how you can get involved.
If you have already been UndocuAlly trained and are looking to get more involved, you can join the Direct Action Committee. The Direct Action Committee will be more of a time commitment as we are counting on you to be there at every event helping out including the short notice letter writing or phone banking campaigns we have throughout the semester as policy issues arise.
What general advice do you have for students who are uncertain in what they want to get involved in? How can they start exploring?
Show up to events that are being hosted around Grounds. Keep an eye out for flyers that advertise the events that might be of interest to you. Also talk to your RA’s, read the UVA connections emails, and ask your peers! Don’t be scared to ask questions and go out of your comfort zone to explore knew things.
