Pre-Health Advising Fellow 2022-2023

The University of Virginia Career Center and Department of Student Health & Wellness are jointly seeking a Pre-Health Fellow for the 2022-23 academic year, who will serve as a near-peer advisor for Pre-Health Advising in the UVA Career Center and a Medical Scribe for UVA Student Health & Wellness. This paid position will support the mission of the Career Center to foster holistic career development and facilitate connections to educate, inspire confidence, and empower all students to launch professionally and personally fulfilling lives as well as the mission of Student Health & Wellness to help students reach their full potential by optimizing their well-being and health during their time at the University of Virginia and beyond. This will be done through the following duties and responsibilities:

UVA Career Center Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide pre-health advising information to undergraduate students through individual drop-in sessions and appointments
  • Collaborate with PHA Team to create and manage special projects, such as a shadowing program with UVA Medical Center and/or additional special projects.
  • Provide administrative support for Pre-Health Advising Peers program and Pre-Health Leadership Advisory Board.
  • Serve as a teaching assistant for ELA2610—Liberal Arts and the Health Professions
  • Prepare and present group workshops.
  • Contribute to Pre-Health Pulse Newsletter and other student communication.
  • Provide PHA team support with data collection, analytics, and communication.

Department of Student Health and Wellness Duties and Responsibilities:

Medical Scribes provide research and clinical assistance to faculty by performing on-site medical transcription. They work directly with patients to obtain patient data and specimens as required by protocols. They enter data into project and medical record databases and assist with documentation. They may accompany physicians on patient encounters to record accurate medical information including notes of communication, past medical records, laboratory results, etc. Specifically, this position will:

  • Will be working in the COVID testing clinic and Medical Services clinic and in satellite clinics sponsored by SHW.
  • Will be trained and fitted to personal protective equipment.
  • Will assist in specimen collection (including COVID) and patient education.
  • Will float to other clinical areas of medical services to serve as scribe and support to provider and nurses.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience with (or exposure to) clinical health careers and/or college student advising
  • Pre-work health screening: Will be required to complete pre-work health screening and meet immunization requirements for working in a healthcare setting.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged standing up to 8 hours per day, with breaks
  • Walking between patient care areas and to courier box
  • Able to carry loads up to 20 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to students who are currently in a bridge year and in the application process for medical school. It’s also preferred that the candidate has engaged with Pre-Health Advising services such as appointments and programs, and the Pre-Health Student Leadership Advisory Board. Candidates should possess strong written and verbal communication skills and the desire to enhance those skills. Experience providing excellent customer service is helpful. Strong applicants will also possess interpersonal and organizational skills, the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, and the ability to take initiative and identify opportunities to match skills/interests with office needs. Applicants should demonstrate an enthusiasm for the health professions as well as creativity and initiative to learn new information. Above all, candidates should express a genuine desire to support and serve pre-health students.

Compensation: $20/hr

Appointment Start/End Dates: July 1,2022 – May 15,2023 (approximate)

The Pre-Health Fellow will work 1500 hours over the course of the appointment, for approximately 32 hours per week—16 hours with the UVA Career Center and 16 hours with the Department of Student Health and Wellness.
