International Student Support Group

This is a weekly support group for international students to discuss common issues as they adjust to the culture in the U.S. and on UVA Grounds. International students often face multiple challenges, including language, communication, social, and academic stressors in a culturally new environment. The group focuses specifically on: providing a safe and supportive space for connection; discussing common issues during international students’ initial and on-going process of cross-cultural adaptation; discussing COVID-19’s impact on various aspects of international students’ life and their stress; learning about resources and coping strategies; discussing challenges and rewards associated with living, learning and working at UVA; and facilitating personal and cultural growth and academic success.

  • Group co-leaders: Baozhen Xie, PhD & Caren Freeman, PhD
  • Fridays, 1:15 - 2:30pm EST (VIRTUAL)
  • Open to all UVA students as well as exchange students, postdoctoral researchers, medical residents and international scholars
  • To join, contact Dr. Xie at or Dr. Freeman at

Global Bridges Workshop Series

Global Bridges is a program through CAPS and ISO that integrates the topics of multiculturalism and mental health. The workshop meets once a month focusing on a different issue. The goals of Global Bridges are to facilitate meaningful dialogue about mental health in different areas (academic stress, relationships, balancing a social life with school), bridge cultural and linguistic gaps, and provide a space for international students and scholars to share their experiences and thoughts about the American lifestyle.
