Career Peer Educator Application: Project Areas for 2019-2020

Interested in applying to be a Career Peer Educator (CPE)? Applications for the 2019-2020 academic year open on January 7 in Handshake!

One of the many components of the CPE role is collaborating with a supervisor on short and long-term projects that support the Career Center mission. The following list includes anticipated CPE project roles for next year - if applying, you will be asked to indicate your project preferences in the CPE application. Please note these are preferences only and are subject to change. Some of these roles may also be filled by returning CPEs. Open project roles will be further discussed at the first round of interviews. Please contact Michelle Ball at mball@virginia.edu with questions.

CPE PROJECT ROLES FOR 2019-2020

Exploration Team

  • Provide programming support to the team during such events as COLA class presentations, Career Exploration Workshops, Days on the Lawn Resource Fair, Family Weekend Open House and other major events
  • Support the development and curation of a weekly exploration newsletter and blog that focuses on aiding exploring students in the process of discovering major(s), events, internships, and full-time job opportunities in various fields.
  • Provide direct student service/peer advising during office hours.
  • Contribute to presentations/special projects that target groups such as res life, 1st/2nd Year groups, etc.

Science & Sustainability Team

  • Write blog posts each week about
    • Science & Sustainability related jobs and internship opportunities
    • Initiatives around grounds
  • Create Science & Sustainability newsletter weekly highlighting
    • Career development advice
    • Outside articles
    • Job/ internship opportunities
    • Events occurring on grounds in VA region
  • Research Science & Sustainability industry trends and share with counselor and other students
  • Help with Science & Sustainability specific advising and events

Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship Team

  • Write blog posts and promotional content about:
    • Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship related jobs and internship opportunities
    • Initiatives around grounds
  • Create Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship newsletter weekly highlighting:
    • Career development advice
    • Outside articles
    • Job/ internship opportunities
    • Events occurring on grounds in VA region
  • Research Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship industry trends and develop new online career resources
  • Help with and create content for Business, Technology & Entrepreneurship specific events

Public Service and Government Team

  • Source content, format and send biweekly community newsletter
  • Curate and add new content to the Public Service community website (blogs, website page resources)
  • Develop and post original blog content on topics related to Public Service careers
  • Identify and connect with relevant student groups including supporting current partnership with the Public Service Committee of Student Council
  • Assist with Public Service Community programming and advising

Virginia Alumni Mentoring Team

  • Manage day-to-day processes for the Virginia Alumni Mentoring program, including approving users and running reports
  • Market VAM by attending in-person events (e.g., student activity fairs) and creating marketing materials, including:
    • Newsletters
    • Tips & tricks
    • Blog Posts
  • Help with the coordination of various career academies by:
    • Developing pre-surveys, collab sites, bios, communication to students, etc.
    • Helping to coordinate and brainstorm future academies

Diversity and Inclusion (Executive Team Member)

  • Identifies and develops relationships with student leaders and organizations serving special and underrepresented populations on Grounds including African-American/Black Students, American Indian Students, Asian/Asian Pacific America Students, Hispanic/Latinx Students, International Students, LGBTQ Students, Middle Eastern Students, Transfer Students, Veterans and Women
  • Sources, develops and send content for the Diversity Digest – a biweekly e-newsletter
  • Collaborates with executive board to encourage programming requests from student leaders and organizations serving special and underrepresented populations
  • Serves on executive team, which meets weekly to help guide CPE program initiatives, develop projects, and provide support to the overall cohort
