Google's Diversity Update

Google has been getting a lot of flack recently for its lack of diversity. From a controversial memo that has been circulating in the media to the dismal number of non-asian people of color, that criticism may not be unwarranted. This shortcoming for Google is especially surprising given that the search engine amasses information about the entire world for all of its people every second of the day. You would think that a company responsible for delivering such an infinite variety of information would itself be a diverse place to work. 

Connecting your CIO to your Future: Alternative Spring Break

Check out this week’s spotlight on Alternative Spring Break (ASB) featuring the President of ASB, Gillean Kelly, who is a fourth year majoring in Biology. ASB is a completely student-run service organization that sends UVA students on service trips during spring break. The trips are both domestic and international, and there is a wide range of service activities available. ASB service trips combine self-reflection, service learning, and group dialogue to stimulate an enriching and meaningful experience for every participant. Read on to learn Gillean’s journey with ASB.

UVA Development Hub

UVA Career Center – February 19th, 2018

The UVA Dev Hub was founded by Vice President of Information Technology, Ron Hutchins under the leadership of Gloria Felicia and Nadim El-jaroudi, with the help a group of 5 student interns. It is a platform for students to finalize their startup ideas, learn how to code, and build websites as well as mobile apps for their projects. UVA Dev Hub, which stands for “Development Hub,” seeks to solve two major problems that often prevent students from launching their ideas:

NGIC Career Fair

On March 29th (10am – 3pm) the National Ground Intelligence Center (in Charlottesville – just past the airport) will be hosting a Career Fair! There over 30 fulltime and internship positions available and NGIC is authorized to make same day offers to qualified candidates.

Intel's Progress On Its Bold Diversity Goals.

It looks like Intel is taking the lead for tech companies who realize the importance of diversity in the workplace. Intel made a $300 million investment to diversify its workforce, entrepreneur funding, and supply chain in 2015. Since then, the overall gap between Intel's workforce and full representation is down by 65%. In 2014, Intel reported that its workforce was unrepresentative by a gap of 2,300 people. In 2017, that number has gone down to 801.
