The mission of the Advisory Board is to advise and actively support the University of Virginia Career Center in achieving its mission of becoming the premier Career Center in the country.

The Advisory Board will provide a forum for employers and UVA Career Center staff to engage in relevant discussions regarding a wide variety of career and employment issues.  Information gathered from these discussions will contribute to the quality and impact of services and programs for UVA students.

The Advisory Board will include representatives from a wide variety of industries which employ UVA graduates.  This board will meet at least twice each year on Grounds.  UVA faculty members and career services affiliate partners from Commerce, Engineering, Batten, Architecture, and Economics will serve as ex officio Board members.  Board meeting topics may include current economic and business trends, skills needed by new college graduates, internship programs, employer development strategies, and marketing to today's young adults, etc.

The Board will include representatives across each of UVA Career Center's Community Areas:

  • Business
  • Creative Arts, Media, and Entertainment
  • Public Service and Government
  • Engineering, Science, Technology
  • Healthcare
  • Education, Counseling & Youth Development

Additional areas of focus will also include:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Data Analytics / Science

Advisory Board Objectives

  • Increase staff knowledge of industry and economic trends
  • Share current information regarding the job market for college graduates
  • Clarify skills most needed in today's world of work
  • Discuss and strategize on techniques for marketing to students and employers
  • Facilitate increased employer, alumni, and faculty interaction
  • Foster new employer development strategies while also facilitating linkages with targeted organizations
  • Provide feedback to the Career Center team and faculty on curricula alignment with recruiting needs in targeted industries
  • Aid in evaluating strategic plans, measuring performance, and assessing learning outcomes

Advisory Board Member Role

  • The Advisory Board is not regarded as a substitute for any administrative body at UVA. Instead, it is intended to supplement and stimulate change and/or improvement in Career Services for UVA students.
  • If available, board members will actively post available jobs and internships
  • Be open to engaging in presentations that educate students on industry trends or enhance the professional development of students.
  • Serve as an advisor to Career Center ​staff members on industry related trends
  • Participate in “Alumni-In-Residence” programs to engage with students, faculty, and staff
  • Participate in periodic reviews or surveys that assess the professional development needs of the students within the committee members designated industry areas
  • Serve as a sounding board of opinion on items proposed by the departmental faculty and staff.

Advisory Board Leadership & Structure

The co-chairs will be responsible for: coordinating the selection process for adding new committee members each year; scheduling meetings of the committee; facilitating the meetings; recording the minutes of the meetings; and disseminating copies of the minutes to all interested persons.

  • Chairs will be appointed to 2-year terms (with the opportunity for 1 extension)

Advisory Board Members

(16 member Board + Career Center  Community Leaders)

Members will serve a three-year term. At the end of the term, they may either rotate off or have the opportunity to be reappointed for another three-year term. New members will be selected each year for a three-year term. Student members will serve a one-year term, subject to renewal. This selection process will be the responsibility of the committee co-chairs and will take place during the early part of the fall term.

Any Advisory Board member may resign at any time with verbal or written notice to the Chairperson. Replacements for resignees or others not fulfilling their term will be appointed by Co-Chairs, in agreement with at least fifty percent of the Board

Meetings

The Advisory Committee will meet once during the spring semester of each academic year. Electronic meetings/correspondence will be held when necessary to address issues that arise. If a member misses more than 3 consecutive meetings, then they can be removed from the Board at the discretion of the Board Co-Chairs.

Amendment of the Charter

Suggestions for changes to the Charter should be communicated to the Board Chair, who then presents suggestions at the next Board meeting. The charter may then be amended by a majority vote of the Board.
