Learn how to explore, connect, and take action during your time at UVA! Below is our quick guide to our resources with recommendations by class year.


Class of 2025

  • Settle into your new home away from home. Explore the UVA Grounds and Charlottesville area!  
  • Share your dream majors and internships with a mentor or Career Counselor. Swing by the Career Center's 1515 location from 12 pm to 4 pm for a coffee career chat with one of our experienced career counselors (1515 University Ave, 2nd Floor). 
  • Search for an alumni mentor on the Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM) platform
  • Start something new, such as joining a new student organization, or exercise class.
  • Spark a conversation about class with a faculty member during office hours.
  • Take time during the semester or year to connect back to family and friends for support.
  • Self-reflect on your journey so far through journaling, or meditation.
  • Attend a UVA sporting event and learn the UVA cheers! 

Explore Career Pathways & Gain Skills 

  • Take the online PathwayU assessment to learn more about your interests, skills, and values.
  • Set up your Handshake profile to get the latest information on upcoming events and unique opportunities to gain skills.  
  • Sign up for industry-specific Career Communities newsletters to find the best possible information on the career pathways you are most interested in! 
  • Review and discuss major(s) of interest(s) pre-requisites with your academic advisor. 
  • Attend our Career Fairs to talk directly with employers interested in hiring UVA students and learn about their internship programs. 
  • Interested in a subject? Take a class in it, or utilize online resources like LinkedIn Learning or Coursera.
  • Attend a Career Center event and start meeting classmates and employers that share your interests! We offer over 100+ events each academic year to help students connect with UVA alumni and industry leaders from a variety of fields. Learn more about upcoming events on Handshake

Enhance Your Application Materials & Start Expanding Your Professional Network 

  • Meet with a career counselor to learn about key recruitment timelines for summer internships. Schedule a one-on-one appointment via Handshake and/or visit industry-specific Career Community drop-ins in Newcomb Hall, room 170. 
  • Take the online PathwayU assessment to learn more about your interests, skills, and values.
  • Attend upcoming in-person or virtual networking events or career fairs.  
  • Consider what UVA faculty member or current/previous supervisor would be best to reach out to as a professional reference. This will be very important when you start applying for full-time job opportunities!  
  • Search for an alumni mentor on the Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM) platform that works for a company or organization you're interested in applying to in the future.  
  • Gain new technical skills using free online platforms such as LinkedIn Learning or Coursera.  
  • Search for upcoming employer information sessions and other networking opportunities on Handshake. Be sure to update your Handshake profile to ensure you don't miss important deadlines or opportunities.
  • Create or update your LinkedIn profile before applying to internships. Utilize our VMock - LinkedIn Profile Review Tool (Aspire) to ensure it's ready to be viewed by a wider network of mentors and employers! 
  • Perfect your cover letter and resume and have it reviewed by Career Center staff. Upload your resume on VMock (24-7 online resume review tool).

  • Search for an alumni mentor on the Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM) platform that works for a company or organization you are interested in working for or a career path you think would be a great fit. 

Perfect Your Application Materials & Take Action

  • Develop an action plan to reach your short and long-term career goals by meeting one-on-one with a career counselor. You can easily schedule a one-on-one appointment online through Handshake. To schedule an appointment, select Career Center, and then Appointments on the top navigation bar within Handshake
  • Attend upcoming in-person or virtual networking events or career fairs.  
  • Explore 'gap year' or service programs, Peace Corps, or other services organizations. 
  • Research graduate degree programs.  
  • Consider what UVA faculty member or current/previous supervisor would be best to reach out to as a professional reference. This will be very important when you start applying for full-time job opportunities!
