PROPEL: 2021 Project-based Learning Programs 

Propel is UVA's project-based learning program designed for students to gain valuable skills and solve real-world problems.    


PUBLIC HEALTH & TABLEAU 

Engage with real-world data sets related to socioeconomic disparities and public health, learn how to visualize data with Tableau, gain experience working in teams, and connect with alumni and employer mentors working in public health in this exciting 5-week program! 

PROGRAM OVERVIEW 

Propel: Public Health & Tableau is a new 5-week program designed to provide UVA students with an opportunity to learn skills in Tableau and participate in team-based projects to develop a research question and analyze and visualize socioeconomic and public health data in addition to learning about careers in public health. The full program will run from June 21st - July 23rd and is free and open to all undergraduate majors! 

Apply by registering for this Handshake event and filling out the application by April 9, 2021. Acceptances will be awarded on April 30, 2021. 

In order to accommodate internships that may have been lost due to the COVID-19 situation, priority registration will be given to rising 4th and 3rd-year students (current 2nd and 3rd years). This program is limited to 30 students and decisions will be based on a required application.  

HOW IT WORKS

Over the course of this 5-week program, students will take classes to learn data visualization skills in Tableau, participate in teams to apply their skills in projects using real-world datasets, and present their projects to a panel of employer partners and alumni. Additionally, students’ career exploration will be supported as they connect with public health professionals in a variety of roles through informative speakers and panels. 

BENEFITS

  • Financial Stipend - All students will receive a $500 stipend for participation in this program.

  • Enhanced Resume - The acquired skills in Tableau, intense project work, and alumni coaching will provide students will new experiences to enhance their resumes. 

  • Career Exploration - Through the project work and skills-based online training programs, students will leave the program with a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, but more importantly a better understanding of what they like and don’t like. 

  • Mentorship - Students will have the chance to connect directly with UVA alumni mentors throughout the process.

TIMELINE & REGISTRATION 

The program will run from June 21st - July 23rd and is free and open to all undergraduate majors.  All students will be placed on 5-person teams and interact with alumni mentors to support their project. 

Propel is limited to 30 participants. Students must apply by registering for this Handshake event and filling out the application. Applications will be due on April 9th and acceptances will be awarded by April 30.
