Get Started 

Appointments 

Students can set up a virtual appointment with a career counselor via Handshake or by calling our office at 434-924-8900 M-F from 8am-5pm. Students outside the US, whose waking hours don’t align with our 12-5pm appointment availability, are directed to email careercenter@virginia.edu to request an appointment.  

Handshake 

Handshake is our primary platform for students to apply for jobs and internships, schedule advising appointments, register for events, explore resources, and more!

Upcoming Workshops & Events

Students can register for upcoming workshops and events via Handshake. In addition to the 150+ events we offer each year, many employers also host special information sessions and workshops on the platform that are specifically for UVA students. Learn more about upcoming Fall 2020 events

The below recommendations were made by Professor Tim Davis, Associate Professor of Public Policy, Frank Batten School of Public Policy. Prior to joining Batten, Tim served as the Executive Director for Resilience & Leadership Development at the University of Virginia.  He also previously served as the Director of the UVA Center for Counseling & Psychological Services and as the Director of Clinical Services at the University of Michigan Counseling & Psychological Services Department.   


Explore 

PathwayU 

PathwayU is a new platform designed for UVA students to help them understand their values, interests, personality, and workplace preferences. Along with the assessments (which together take approximately 25 minutes) students can see their top career matches and discover career paths.

UVA Career Communities

The UVA Career Communities are organized by industry and each Community below sends weekly newsletters with information about industry trends, resources, funding opportunities, job/internship postings available in Handshake, and more.  Students can sign-up for industry-specific newsletters by updating their Handshake profile.   

More Exploration Resources 

As mentioned in the presentation, Candid Career provides informational video interviews featuring UVA alumni and industry professionals. We also free access to a variety of helpful online resources to help students explore, including Career Insider Powered by Vault, which provides company, profession, and industry overviews. 


Network 

Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM)

Students can connect with alumni who have volunteered to provide insights about choosing and starting a career in their field through the Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM) platform. 

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional career-oriented social network, enabling members to reconnect with old friends, classmates, and colleagues; form new contacts to help power a career, and get advice from industry professionals. Create a profile and learn tips and tricks on the LinkedIn Guide to Networking page.

VMock

VMock provides instant personalized resume feedback via an online platform that uses sophisticated algorithms and data science along with machine learning and artificial intelligence to assist you in optimizing your resume. 

InterviewStream

Students can practice interviews at any time using the InterviewStream tool. They can create custom interviews, get tips on improving skills, and record and save interviews. Make an individual account using the link.  

Hoos Career Guide

The Hoos Career Guide provides resume and cover letter templates, job search strategies, interview tips, and more.  

UVA Career Center Podcast 

Students can also check out the UVA Career Center podcast, Work in Progress on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and SoundCloud.  We have episodes on resumes, cover letters, networking, and more.

UVA Internship Placement Program 

The UVA Internship Placement Program connects students with quality professional internships with public sector and private industry organizations in Charlottesville as an important part of its public service mission.

USAJobs.gov is the Federal Government's official one-stop source for federal jobs and employment information. Our Public Service and Government Career Community offers a variety of helpful resources for UVA students, including the Insiders Guide to the Federal Resume & USAJobs.gov


Skill-Development 

UVA Career Accelerator Programs 

Coursera 

Coursera is an online learning platform in which students can foster and refine their career readiness by taking flexible online skill-development classes.  Due to COVID-19, UVA students will now have even more access to online courses. Some examples include Foundations of Business Strategy, UX Design Fundamentals, Introduction to Data Science in Python, Voices of Social Change, Fundamentals of Graphic DesignDesign Thinking for the Greater Good: Innovation in the Social Sector, and much more.  

Propel is UVA's new project-based learning program designed for students to gain valuable skills and solve real-world problems for clients.  During this 10-week program, students will engage in real-world company projects, gain experience working in teams, connect with alumni and employer mentors from leading consulting firms like McKinsey, Accenture, Mastercard, and more. 

Radify Labs 

Through Radify Labs, students complete four weeks of technical skill training during which they gain industry knowledge and job-ready skills. The program is 10 hours per week commitment and runs on a flexible time schedule. In this program, which will run from May 11-June 7, you will learn the fundamentals of design (UX, graphic, or web) or digital marketing, work on related projects, connect with professionals in the industry, and receive feedback on your progress. We are currently accepting applications via Handshake for the May 2020 cohort with very limited spots left and are prioritizing students who have had summer plans disrupted by COVID-19. Students must apply by Sunday, April 26 at 11:55pm in order to be considered. 


Graduate & Professional School 

Our office offers both pre-law and pre-health advising appointments and workshops with sign-ups Handshake. We have many online pre-lawpre-health advising, and graduate school resources on our website, including a Pre-Health Advising Blog. Students can sign-up for a weekly newsletter by updating their Handshake profile.
