Executive Director, Student Resilience and Leadership Development
As Executive Director for Resilience & Leadership Development, Tim provides strategic direction on the University’s efforts to foster resilience and build leadership potential in the student community. Tim is especially interested in helping young leaders learn to extend their influence deeper into their organizations.
Prior to his current role, Tim was the Director of the U.Va. Center for Counseling & Psychological Services. Previously he served as Associate Director/Clinical Director at the University of Michigan Counseling & Psychological Services Department. He held previous positions at the Indiana University Counseling & Psychological Services Department and the University of Dayton Counseling Center.
Tim teaches a course titled “Resilient Leadership of Teams” in UVA’s Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy and teaches a first-year seminar titled “The Resilient Leader” in the College of Arts & Sciences. He has taught courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels on a variety of topics, including group counseling, psychological assessment, psychopathology, sex therapy, counseling techniques, and advanced seminars on the use of dreams in therapy. He received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award from the College of Education at Indiana University. He has authored and co-authored book chapters and articles on resilience-related topics including existential well-being, spirituality in counseling, dream work, group counseling, and career choice in young adulthood.
Tim earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park and his master’s in Counseling from Arizona State University. Tim completed a postgraduate program in Organizational Development at the Gestalt Institute (Columbus, OH) and was on staff as an organizational consultant and business team facilitator with Business of People, an independent consulting firm. More recently he completed the Leadership/Executive Coaching Certification program at Georgetown University. Prior to his career as a clinical psychologist, Tim held a variety of marketing and research positions with The Procter & Gamble Company. He left P&G in order to study the development of happier and healthier individuals and organizations.
