Externships in Education

Kalea Obermeyer – March 16th, 2018

Interested in learning more about non-profit organizations and higher education? Have a few days to spare this summer? Participate in a UVA summer externship!

An externship is a job shadowing opportunity that can last anywhere from 3 to 7 days.  It allows you to gain personal exposure to a career field and can serve as the gateway to a new professional experience. UVA IDEA’s externships match UVA students to employers across the country. Externships related to the ECYD community vary from non-profits in Charlottesville, to prominent graduate schools like Darden and Brown University, to interning in education with the United Nations Foundation. Click here to see the externships page, and browse the list below for some of the ECYD-related opportunities.

Brown University Graduate School

The Graduate School is Brown University's hub for all master's, PhD, and executive programs. As such, the Graduate School is focused on academic initiatives, diversity and inclusion, student affairs, and professional development. Depending on externs' interests, potential activities might include sitting in on program reviews and academic policy and curriculum meetings; assisting with projects to expand and develop the visibility of student resources; meeting with students in MFA programs; assisting with projects to support historically underrepresented groups of graduate students; developing marketing and recruitment materials; and assisting with data projects.

During this 4-day externship, participants will be exposed to program coordination in a higher education setting, network with higher education professionals, have access to two recent graduates for mentorship, and work on projects that contribute to the Darden Center for Global Initiatives’ mission.

The externship host will work with students for a position anytime between May 28th - Aug. 24th, taking place in Charlottesville, VA.

Excelencia in Education accelerates Latino student success in higher education by promoting Latino student achievement, conducting analysis to inform educational policies, and advancing institutional practices while collaborating with those committed and ready to meet the mission. Externs will learn what it is like to work in a small, fast-paced nonprofit organization, conduct informational interviews, and shadow the team during weekly staff meetings and learn about the operations of Excelencia in Education.
