Tips Regarding Course Enrollment

Didn't get the exact class schedule you wanted for Spring 2018? Are you feeling like the classes you take next semester will dictate your next few years here and even into your career? Don't fret. We're here to let you know that your classes predetermine your career path.

Your coursework is just one piece of the career puzzle. The other pieces of the puzzle include your extracurriculars, any jobs or internships, skill sets, research experience, and the list goes on. Your major doesn't always equal your career. In fact, only 27% of UVA graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences reported a direct connection between their major and their current career. When you're worried about your course schedule, remind yourself of all the other factors of the career equation!

However, if there are a few classes that you had your heart set on, here are a few ways you can boost your chances of getting into those classes:

  • Put yourself on the waitlist - students might drop the class and spaces might start to open up, so the closer you are to the top of the waitlist, the better.
  • Email the professor - they might offer alternative suggestions to increase your likelihood of getting into the class, or provide advice on classes that could be similar to theirs.
  • Go to the class on the first day - you can get a better feel of whether or not the class would be beneficial for you, and if you emailed the professor, then they can put a face to the name.

Hope that helps and best of luck!
