CIO Spotlight: Futures in Fashion Association (FIFA) at UVA
Our mission is to present the University of Virginia with a forum to connect all UVA students interested in the fashion industry. Through regular meetings, organized speakers, and fashion education and career-related events, FIFA works to create an open dialogue between UVA students interested in fashion and industry professionals to raise awareness within the student body about working in the fashion industry. The goal of FIFA is to be a networking organization on Grounds where students interested in working in the Fashion Industry can meet; discuss career goals and Industry opportunities; and generally grow and learn from each other’s experiences and interests.
FIFA officers and members draw from a wide range of majors and interests at UVA but are connected through a love for fashion and a desire to work in the fashion industry. FIFA prides itself on maintaining strong connections with FIFA and UVA alumni that have pursued a career in fashion. We have a strong network of successful alumni working at companies including J.Crew, Ralph Lauren, Victoria's Secret, S'well Bottle, Bloomingdale's and Macy's. In addition to fostering connections with alumni, FIFA emphasizes the importance of creating a community of current students through fun and interactive membership events. Throughout the year, members have the opportunity to get together and review fashion shows, chat with officers over coffee, or attend fashion related events on Grounds.
FIFA events range from mock interviews and guest speakers to movie nights and coffee chats. FIFA provides an opportunity for everyone—regardless of major or work experience—to learn about fashion and find a niche in the industry. Some past speakers we have hosted include Keith George, former CMO at Gilt; Brett Wagner, Director of Design at Ralph Lauren; and Colin Hunter, CEO of Alton Lane. Some past events include a case study with the CMO of David's Bridal, consulting info session with Kurt Salmon, the Brand Girls Networking Workshop, LinkedIn photoshoot on the Lawn, and co-sponsorship of the Fall Retail RoundUp hosted by the UVA Career Center.
