COMM 1559 Exploring the World of Business

UVA Career Center – April 13th, 2017

The Career Center’s Business Community is partnering with the Comm School to offer a 1-week long, 1 credit course in Washington D.C. to help students explore the world of business through company visits, alumni mentors, and hands-on cases.  This course is a residential course in DC. Students will be housed at Catholic University. Due to the case projects and evening assignments, students are required to stay in housing provided through UVA. There is a $650 course fee that includes all room and board associated with the course.

 

COMM-1559: Exploring the World of Business

Date: May 22- 26, 2017 (Arrive Sunday afternoon, leave on Friday afternoon)

Course Format: Presentation and case studies (1-credit)

Target Audience: 24 students; Restricted to rising 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students

Description: This course builds on your core liberal arts education and builds competency in five core business disciplines:  accounting, finance, strategy, marketing, and project management. Students will expand their business acumen in Finance, Accounting, Consulting, and Marketing, but also develop an understanding of how their Liberal Arts backgrounds have uniquely prepared them for business-oriented careers in these areas. Through active engagement with alumni mentors and hands-on cases, students will develop a deeper recognition of the day-to-day roles entry-level professionals encounter in various business disciplines and through intensive career coaching sessions, the students will enhance their ability to communicate their personal story to prospective employers.

Instructor Permission: Students must submit a response to the question “Describe your interest in business and your goals for this course.”
